Taping and strapping techniques are used for those that are suffering with an injury or weakness of a specific joint or soft tissue structure.
Rigid tape is used to secure and stabilize joints to minimize their movement. This taping technique is very commonly used on athletes, especially to joints such as the ankle when ligaments are damaged. It can also be used on other joints such as the shoulder and wrist to offer support and stability to that joint.
Softer tapes, such as kinesiology tape is another method of taping used to facilitate a muscle, primarily to aid movement and relieve pain/swelling. The tape helps to lift the skin away from the underlying musculature which enhances blood flow, which in turn increases lymphatic drainage to reduce inflammation.
Both taping techniques are useful for injury treatment and prevention, especially for those involved in sports.
