Joint restriction is a common mobility issue that appears in most joints, especially in ball and socket joints such as the shoulder and hip joint. It is also primarily seen along the spine, especially the lumbar (lower back) region. Restriction of a joint can be caused from direct trauma to the joint or from gradual overuse/ wear and tear. This is seen especially in the spine, as general wear and tear causes the disc between the vertebra to stiffen. This causes a reduction in movement, which can lead to pain.
Joint restriction can be treated with exercise prescription and stretches.
Massage therapy and joint mobilisation and manipulation are used in the appointment sessions to release the tension in the surrounding tissue and joint itself. However, for long-term relief, exercise prescription with stretches is the main therapy needed to be performed daily to gradually release the surrounding muscles and joint.
